Jilin Songhua Lake (吉林松花湖), an artificial lake formed in 1937 by the damming of the Songhua River for the construction of the Fengman Hydroelectric Power Station, is characterized by its vast water expanse and numerous bays, resembling a dragon in shape. The scenic area features ten distinct attractions, divided into eastern and western banks by the Fengman Dam. Various health resorts have been established here, referred to as therapeutic scenic spots. From the Fengman Wharf, visitors can explore several attractions, including Camel Peak, Phoenix Dance Pool, Five Tigers Island, Sleeping Dragon Pool, Shilong Wall, Mount Moti, and Ehe Island.
The best time to visit Songhua Lake is during the summer when boat rides offer refreshing breezes that dispel the heat. As you travel deeper into the lake, the surrounding mountains become greener, the environment quieter, and the air fresher, providing a uniquely enjoyable experience.
Each season offers distinct beauty: in winter, the mountains are draped in white, and the lake freezes, creating a mirror-like surface, ideal for hunting or ice fishing; spring bursts with wildflowers along the cliffs; and autumn’s fiery red maples, orange oaks, golden larches, and creamy white birches create a picturesque, colorful panorama.
The area surrounding Songhua Lake encompasses over 210,000 hectares of forest, featuring natural woods like ash and birch, as well as planted red and white pines. It is rich in medicinal herbs such as ginseng and schisandra, along with local specialties like wild grapes, hazelnuts, and mushrooms. The lake is also home to a variety of fish, including whitefish, bream, carp, and silver carp. Among these, the whitefish is particularly prized for its delicious meat, while bream is known for making exceptional fish soup. Enjoying a meal of fish and soup by the lakeside is a true highlight of a visit to Songhua Lake.
