Songhua Lake Ski Resort (松花湖滑雪场) is located in Jilin City, Jilin Province, nestled at the northern foothills of the Daqing Mountains and alongside Songhua Lake. As one of China’s prominent urban ski resorts, it sits at an elevation of 935 meters, just 19 kilometers from the city center, and spans an impressive 175 hectares, accommodating up to 8,000 skiers simultaneously. The resort has hosted significant events, including the 6th National Winter Games.
The ski resort features six ski runs and three lifts, catering to various skill levels with trails for intermediate, beginner, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping. One of its highlights is the aerial cable car, which stretches 1,800 meters and offers breathtaking views of the expansive forest and the city of Jilin below.
Originally established in 1962 with just one alpine ski run and approximately 600 square meters of accommodations, the resort faced a hiatus during the Cultural Revolution, leading to neglect of its facilities. However, after the policy changes, the Jilin City government prioritized winter sports, beginning renovations in 1980. By February 1982, the resort successfully hosted China’s first youth skiing competition and an invitation for alpine skiing.
In 1983, leaders from the National Sports Commission inspected the area and recognized its favorable conditions: fresh air, high mountains, dense forests, and stable atmospheric pressure. The resort benefits from a humid climate, with an average annual snowfall, and the nearby Songhua River provides additional moisture that contributes to frost in the ski area. Typically, daytime temperatures range from -10 to -13 degrees Celsius, with an average snow cover of about one meter during the ski season, which runs from December to March. This makes it an ideal venue for skiing competitions and training, prompting plans for expansion and investment to meet international standards.
