The Former Site Museum of Changchun Film Studio (长春电影制片厂旧址博物馆) is part of the Changchun Film Group Corporation and was restored based on the original 1937 architecture of the “Manchurian Film Association” (Man’ei). The restoration was carried out under the principle of “repairing the old as it was,” preserving the historical integrity of the site. The museum is a cultural and artistic landmark that chronicles the origins, development, and evolution of Changchun Film Studio. With a total building area of 46,137 square meters, the museum showcases various aspects of film history, including film artistry, props, special effects, craftsmanship, and production through exhibitions, artifact preservation, and interactive displays.
The museum features multiple sections, such as the Changchun Film Art Museum, exhibition areas of the original film studios, a cinema, a music hall (home to the Changchun Film Orchestra), and the surrounding Changchun Film Cultural District. The Art Museum reveals little-known behind-the-scenes stories and historical artifacts from the early days of New China’s film industry. It also systematically displays the studio’s seven pioneering achievements in Chinese cinema and presents rare footage, photographs, and historical items for the first time, showcasing the illustrious journey and artistic milestones of Changchun Film Studio. The exhibition area of the original film studios includes displays of film props, dubbing works, and the historic Studio 1, 2, and 3, blending the themes of film industrial tourism with the studio’s rich artistic heritage.
Founded in October 1945, Changchun Film Studio is known as the cradle of New China’s film industry. It achieved “seven firsts” in the history of Chinese cinema and has produced more than 900 feature films and over 1,000 dubbed foreign films. Over its decades of operation, the studio has been especially known for its films depicting rural life and wartime stories, with works marked by the rustic charm and rugged spirit of the Northeast’s “black soil” region.
