Tiexi 1905 Cultural and Creative Park (铁西1905文化创意园) is a vibrant space in Shenyang, transformed from the former Second Metalworking Workshop of the Shenyang Heavy Industry Group. The park retains its industrial heritage, with the distinctive sawtooth-shaped roof and steel beams that once supported massive gantry cranes, providing a unique backdrop for creative expression. Each small compartment within the building now serves as a hub for young entrepreneurs engaged in cultural and creative industries.
Established in 2009, the park commemorates the closure of the Northern Heavy Industries plant, which had been a pillar of Shenyang’s industrial past. The final casting of molten iron before the plant’s closure on May 18, 2009, produced the massive “Tiexi” (meaning “Iron West”) characters, each weighing three tons. These characters now hang impressively on the exterior wall of the 1905 Cultural and Creative Park, symbolizing the area’s transition from a center of heavy industry to a cultural landmark. For many older residents, this was a place where they worked for decades.
Today, the park is home to various cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops that appeal to the city’s young, artistic crowd. It also regularly hosts markets, music concerts, and exhibitions, making it a lively gathering spot for culture enthusiasts. A notable feature is Shenyang’s first “Black Box Theater,” which offers a range of performances such as concerts, plays, and stand-up comedy, including mime performances since 2021. Performances are conveniently scheduled at 19:05 (a nod to the park’s name), and the theater becomes particularly active during its annual theater festival, which runs from late June to December.
