Suzhou Travel Guide
Suzhou, located in southeastern Jiangsu Province, has long been celebrated by poets as a “paradise on earth” and marveled at by Marco Polo as the “Venice of the East.” This ancient city is nestled within a network of waterways, with streets built alongside rivers and canals. Buildings are constructed near the water, creating a distinctive landscape of “small bridges, flowing water, and charming homes.”
The beauty of Suzhou mirrors its people—reserved and gentle. There’s no need to retreat to the mountains for tranquility; a stroll through Suzhou’s gardens can captivate and soothe the soul. The picturesque scenery of Taihu Lake just outside Gusu City and the enchanting water towns, rich with Jiangnan charm, add a touch of elegance and vitality to this land of fish and rice. Walking along Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street, one can sense the artistic vibe of this two-thousand-year-old city.
The gardens and waterways of Suzhou offer just a glimpse of its splendor. To truly experience the essence of Jiangnan, one must listen to the melodic strains of Kunqu opera, chat with the locals, and leisurely explore the city’s nooks and crannies. This is the authentic taste of southern China, where history and culture blend seamlessly with modern life.
