Xinghai Park (星海公园), located in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, was constructed in 1909 by the South Manchuria Railway Company and was originally named “Xinggepu Garden.” In 1945, it was renamed to its current title, inspired by a prominent rock partially submerged in the bay known as “Tianwailai Stone,” or “Star Stone.” This feature led to the area being referred to as “Xinghai Bay,” which is also the origin of the park’s name. Covering an area of 15 hectares (150,000 square meters), Xinghai Park is the largest coastal park in the city, consisting of both a waterfront park and a seawater bathing area.
The bathing area of Xinghai Park is one of Dalian’s four major seawater beaches. The beach stretches 800 meters long and is 30 meters wide, with a gentle slope and moderate water depth. At high tide, the water is about 1 meter deep within 6 meters of the shore, and at low tide, it remains 1 meter deep within 300 meters. At 1,000 meters from the shore, the depth reaches 10 meters. Due to these features, Xinghai Park is often called Dalian’s largest “summer paradise.” In recent years, the park has also seen the addition of Dalian’s first water park – Xinghai Water Park, located at the foot of a small hill on the west side of the park. This facility includes high diving boards, a magnetized swimming pool, and other water attractions. The most famous attraction in Xinghai Park is the ocean bungee jump, standing at approximately 55 meters high, offering an unparalleled thrill as it overlooks the sea.
According to legend, many years ago, there was a small fishing village called Kaohai Mountain Village, where the inhabitants lived peacefully by fishing and weaving nets. This coastal area was protected by blackfish and cod, which coexisted harmoniously. However, one summer, a wandering blue shark arrived, attempting to dominate the beautiful bay. The shark attacked tourists and preyed on the local fish, causing chaos in the waters. In response, the Blackfish King rallied the fish to fight back, releasing dark ink to stain the rocks in the bay. Despite their efforts, they could not stop the rampaging shark. The blackfish and cod refused to retreat, fighting bravely, which moved the star gods above. They summoned stones from the heavens, the largest of which struck the blue shark on the head, sending it to the depths of the sea. To this day, half of this massive stone remains visible above the water. The area was restored to peace, and to commemorate the event, the bay was named “Xinghai Bay.”
