Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve (索溪峪自然保护区), whose name is derived from the Tujia language, translates to “Place of Thick Mist” (with “sok” meaning mist, “chi” meaning large, and “yul” meaning place). It is also believed to be named after the rope-like appearance of the streams in the area. This reserve is renowned for its unique geological formations and rich biodiversity, making it a gem within Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Located in the northeastern part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley is closely connected to Tianzi Mountain and covers an area of approximately 180 square kilometers. The reserve is dotted with numerous scenic spots, including Baofeng Lake, Huanglong Cave, Baizhang Gorge, the Ten-Mile Gallery, and Xihai Peak Forest. It features extraordinary caves, breathtaking gorges and lakes, abundant wildlife, and a diverse range of plant species. The landscapes here offer both expansive views and intimate experiences, with each scenic area revealing its own unique charm.
The water in Suoxi Valley adds another layer of allure. Shentang Bay’s submerged stream and cascading waterfall roar like thunder, creating a stunning emerald-green spectacle. Baofeng Lake, often called the “Jade Pool of the Earth,” is known for its picturesque beauty with mirror-like waters and towering peaks reflecting in its surface. The area is also filled with countless bubbling streams that flow continuously throughout the year, their gentle murmurs enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.
One of Suoxi Valley’s distinctive features is its perilous bridges. Among the various unique bridges in the reserve, the most notable are the Xiangfeng Bridge in Baizhang Gorge and the naturally-formed bridge at the entrance of Xianü Cave in the Ten-Mile Gallery Monkey Park. The Xiangfeng Bridge, built during the Song Dynasty, spans about 60 meters with a single arch constructed entirely from rocks, showcasing its remarkable craftsmanship. The Xianü Bridge, also known as the Fairy Bridge, stretches across two towering stone peaks. Measuring around 26 meters long but less than 2 meters wide and 30 to 40 centimeters thick, it offers a breathtaking yet intimidating view of the deep gorges below.
