Yuji Island (玉几岛) boasts a unique natural environment and is one of the three islands on Erhai Lake, earning the reputation as the “number one village in Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake Area.” Movies like “The Sons and Daughters of the Five Golden Flowers” and “Erhai Moon” have been filmed here. Standing on the island, visitors can admire the nineteen peaks of Cangshan Mountain from afar, appreciate the picturesque scenery of the island’s curves up close, and overlook the clear blue waters of Erhai Lake, capturing a splendid and beautiful natural landscape. White ethnic Bai dwellings are well preserved here, with flowing water and blooming flowers in every household, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the ethnic fishing communities. Despite its small size, spanning just over 200 meters in length, almost every household on Yuji Island operates as an inn, with a few shops selling tourism memorabilia.
Yuji Island has a long history and profound cultural heritage. It is a microcosm of Nanzhao culture history, once attracting numerous literati and scholars to come and cultivate their minds. The island is named after the Yuji Monastery, the former residence of Yang Guixian, the wife of Duan Siping, the founding emperor of the Dali Kingdom during the Tang Dynasty. Additionally, historical relics such as the naval camp site of Du Wenxiu from the late Qing Dynasty and the Zhao Family Ancestral Hall, covered in the dust of the years, can still be found on the island.
The Bai ethnic residential architectural complex on Yuji Island is well-preserved, showcasing the unique architectural style and cultural traditions of the Bai people. Attractions such as the Yu Bo Pavilion with its flying eaves and upturned corners provide visitors with excellent opportunities to admire the scenery and learn about the historical culture.
