Zhangshan Grand Canyon, Jixi – The Southern Gateway to Zhejiang

Zhangshan Grand Canyon Jixi

Zhangshan Grand Canyon (鄣山大峡谷), also known as “The Canyon of Great Men,” spans an impressive area of approximately 15 square kilometers. It serves as the southern gateway to the Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity. The canyon is home to 43 nationally significant plant species and 13 protected animal species, making it a vital ecological zone. The Zhangshan Grand Canyon boasts over fifty distinctive scenic spots, each with its own unique features and legendary stories. Among these, the “Four Wonders” stand out: the Giant Statue, Baizhang Cliff, Hulutan Pool, and the Flowering Crown Peak.

The Giant Statue, a natural formation created over millions of years, remarkably resembles the profile of Chairman Mao Zedong in his later years. With its swept-back hairstyle, full forehead, and wise expression, this stone likeness is a tribute to the great leader, earning it the nickname “The Great Man’s Stone.”

Baizhang Cliff, known as “The World’s Largest Stone,” is another highlight within the canyon. Standing 460 meters tall and 180 meters wide, this enormous rock resembles a massive bell standing upright, reaching toward the sky. After a rain, the cliff often presents a stunning display of Buddha’s Light, adding to its mystical allure.

Crown Peak, another marvel, features a 400-year-old pine tree growing atop a rock, a testament to nature’s resilience and beauty. Hulutan Pool, shaped like a gourd, is nestled deep within the canyon. It marks the end of the scenic area and is also the final stop for the sightseeing shuttle, making it a popular spot for visitors to rest before heading back.

The Zhangshan Grand Canyon features a single walking path, making it easy for visitors to explore. You can either walk the entire trail and then return the same way, or take a sightseeing shuttle from the entrance to the top for just 5 RMB. While the shuttle route offers limited views, the real beauty lies along the walking path. For a more relaxed experience, consider taking the shuttle up and then leisurely walking down, enjoying the stunning scenery along the way.
