Longxu Mountain (龙须山) is located in Jixi County, Anhui Province. The mountain is known for its twin peaks: the main peak, Long Peak, rises to an elevation of 1,048.6 meters and features a small, perennial pool at its summit known as Long Pool. The secondary peak, Baisha Peak, offers visitors scenic spots such as Longtai Rock, Stone Gate, Stone Steps, and a cascading waterfall.
Historically, the western slope of Longxu Mountain was home to the Longfeng Zen Temple and an ancient village called Guqiaoan, both of which have been destroyed. The Longfeng Zen Temple is said to have been the place where Hu Zongxian, a prominent Ming Dynasty figure, studied. The mountain is also known for the Longxu Grass, which was used to make fine paper known as Longxu Paper. This paper was highly prized by Li Yu, the last ruler of the Southern Tang Dynasty, who stored it in his “Chengxin Hall.” As a result, Longxu Paper became famous across China, and the mountain was named after this grass.
Longxu Mountain is a sandy, narrow mountain, with its ridge so thin in places that it can only accommodate a single footstep, flanked by cliffs on either side—similar to the famous Jiyu Ridge in Huangshan. From the summit, one can enjoy clear views of nearby natural attractions, including Qingliang Peak and the Zhàngshān Grand Canyon. At the foot of the mountain, a clear river winds its way through the landscape, reflecting the green spring trees along its banks. In the distance, mist-covered mountains add to the picturesque scenery.
The best times to visit Longxu Mountain are in spring and autumn. The climate is humid and mild, with a short but pleasant spring. Summer is the longest season on the mountain, lasting from late May to mid-September, with average temperatures exceeding 22°C. This season also sees the most rainfall, particularly during the plum rain season in mid-June, which lasts around 25 days. If visiting during this time, it is essential to bring an umbrella and several sets of quick-drying clothes. Autumn is brief but brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Winter, which lasts from November to March, is long and cold, with average temperatures below 10°C.
