History of Zhucheng Square

Zhucheng Square, formerly known as People’s Square before 2011 and Spring Thunder Square before 1979, has a rich history that reflects the evolution of public spaces in Guiyang. In 1979, Spring Thunder Square underwent renovations and a name change to “People’s Square.” The revitalization included the addition of square lawns, trees, and seating on both sides of the square, transforming it into a leisure and cultural hub for the public.

In 1999, a significant expansion project began on the northern part of the square, expanding the surface area to 46,552 square meters. The newly developed North Square featured a 20-meter diameter floral clock, two 14.5-meter-high blue transparent pyramids, and several rectangular and triangular fountains that sprayed water in various shapes and patterns.

In 2011, the square underwent further transformation and was officially named Zhucheng Square. This marked a new chapter in the square’s history, and in December of the same year, it opened to the public.

Highlights of Zhucheng Square

Golden Reed Pipe (金芦笙)

Shaped like bamboo, the Golden Reed Pipe symbolizes Guiyang’s rich bamboo culture. This stunning structure is 60 meters long, 48 meters wide, and 28 meters high, comprising eight colossal reed pipes. Arranged in pairs along the cardinal directions, these pipes, each spanning up to 37.85 meters, are constructed from steel and weigh over 25 tons each. The Golden Reed Pipe not only pays homage to traditional bamboo culture but also serves as a modern architectural marvel, adding a touch of elegance and cultural identity to Zhucheng Square.

Auspicious Mythical Beasts (吉祥神兽)

Designed by the renowned Chinese artist Professor Guo Xuanchang, the Auspicious Mythical Beasts embody a fusion of traditional and modern artistic elements. Combining features from six animals – tiger’s head, ox’s hoof, sheep’s horn, phoenix’s wing, dog’s body, and leopard’s tail – these mythical creatures, known colloquially as “Liu Bu Xiang” or “Six Not Alike,” exude a majestic and powerful presence. The design skillfully integrates traditional and contemporary artistic languages, expressing the collective hope for favorable weather, national prosperity, social harmony, and overall well-being.
