Bangchui Island Scenic Area (棒棰岛景区), located at the eastern end of Binhai Road in Dalian, is a picturesque destination known for its stunning combination of mountains, sea, island, and beach. The area is not only a popular spot for wedding photography but also home to the famous Bangchui Island Guesthouse. This guesthouse has hosted numerous national leaders, including Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Hua Guofeng, Hu Yaobang, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin, who have stayed here for rest and recuperation.
The northern part of Bangchui Island Scenic Area is surrounded by mountains covered with lush pines and cypress trees, while the southern part features an expansive sea and a flat sandy beach. About 600 meters offshore stands a small isolated island that resembles a traditional wooden club used for washing clothes, which is how Bangchui Island got its name. The island itself is characterized by steep cliffs, rugged rocks, and an abundance of wildflowers and grasses. Visitors can take a speedboat from the beach pier for a closer look at the island, although the ride can be quite expensive. The beach, though not very large, boasts clear waters and provides a relaxing environment for strolling, sunbathing, or collecting shells and pebbles. However, unlike southern beaches, the sand here is coarser and mixed with stones and shell fragments, making it a bit uncomfortable for barefoot walking. Swimmers should also be cautious of underwater trenches and avoid venturing too far out.
The Bangchui Island Guesthouse, established in 1958, is Dalian’s “state guesthouse.” Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the sea on the other, it is both a renowned tourist attraction and an ideal summer retreat. The guesthouse, often praised as having the largest garden-style villa complex in Asia, covers an area of 870,000 square meters, with a building area of 68,000 square meters. The 13 villas, each with distinct Chinese, Japanese, or European architectural styles, are nestled along the coastline, offering a unique and scenic experience.
Since its establishment, the Bangchui Island Guesthouse has hosted numerous prominent figures, including Chinese leaders such as Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Li Peng, Hu Jintao, Li Ruihuan, Yang Shangkun, Wan Li, and Qiao Shi. Bangchui Island Scenic Area is located at No. 1 Yingbin Road, Zhongshan District, Dalian, Liaoning Province, approximately 9 kilometers from the city center. To get there, you can take bus 90 or Tourist Loop Line and get off at Bangchui Island South Gate Tourist Center Stop (棒棰岛南门游客中心站).
