Step into a city where history, culture, and adventure intertwine – Changchun, the former capital of Puppet Manchukuo and now a vibrant hub of heritage and entertainment. Over three unforgettable days, you’ll uncover the haunting legacy of imperial intrigue, stroll bustling shopping streets filled with modern charm, and dive into thrilling cinematic attractions at one of China’s top theme parks. From historical landmarks to snowy landscapes and rich local flavors, this itinerary invites you to experience the best of Changchun – past and present – one captivating moment at a time.
Day 1: Puppet Manchurian Palace Museum → Eight Ministries of Puppet Manchukuo → Chongqing Road Pedestrian Street
Upon arrival in Changchun, start your morning with a visit to the Puppet Manchurian Palace Museum – the former imperial residence of the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty during the Japanese occupation. It’s close to the train station and easily accessible by foot or a short taxi ride. Immerse yourself in the city’s turbulent history under Japanese imperial rule.
Continue to explore the nearby Eight Ministries of Puppet Manchukuo and the State Council Site, key historical landmarks that reveal the tragic colonial past of Changchun.
At noon, walk over to Chongqing Road Pedestrian Street, the city’s most famous commercial area, known locally as “Golden Street.” This is the perfect place for afternoon shopping – fashion, watches, glasses, snacks, and local specialties are all available. Pick up some stylish clothes and delicious treats to enjoy or wear for photos on the second day!
Dining: After visiting the Puppet Palace, have lunch at Xintiandi Mall nearby. Its basement level offers a wide variety of affordable local street food such as stir-fried noodles, Chinese burgers, stinky tofu, spicy rice cakes, skewers, duck neck, and potato noodles. There are also chain fast-food options like Hegu Jia and Jixiang Wonton. For higher-end dining, the fourth floor offers Japanese cuisine, Korean barbecue, steak, and rice balls. In the evening, try more snacks and authentic local dishes along Chongqing Road.
Day 2: Changying Century City
Changying Century City is a full-day experience – well worth the 240 RMB ticket. It opens at 8:30 AM, so plan to leave early. It’s conveniently reachable by light rail. Return trips to the city are just as easy by rail.
Must-try attractions include: Magic Cube City (dynamic dome theater), IMAX Giant Screen Theater, Extreme Lab, 4D Cinema, High-Speed Shuttle Ride, Hero Show Theater, and Water Screen Maze.
Once inside, check the time board on the right to note the schedule for shows and attractions – many require queueing, so plan flexibly to enjoy them all. After a thrilling day, return to your hotel in the city for a good rest and anticipation of Day 3.
Dining: It’s best to bring your own lunch since food prices inside are quite high. Alternatively, try Maya Restaurant or Birch Forest Restaurant in the park for options like bacon pizza, crispy chicken burgers, and Northeastern-style snacks.
Day 3: Jingyuetan Scenic Area
Located in Changchun’s Jingyue Tourism Economic Development Zone, about 12 km from the city center, Jingyuetan is accessible by light rail. After getting off at University Town Station, you can find breakfast nearby.
The scenic area is divided into four parts: Mountain Views of the North Shore, Forests of the South, Reflections on the Water, and Villages in the East
Jingyuetan offers beautiful water-centered landscapes framed by hills and lush vegetation. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, giant swings, frog jump rides, a unique ski resort, and in winter, the famous Ice and Snow Festival – a must-see!
Dining: Pack your own lunch to avoid high prices at tourist spots. After returning to the city in the afternoon, head to Guilin Road, another vibrant commercial street, and treat yourself to a delicious variety of local and regional foods.
