Hailar National Forest Park – The Closest Park to a City

Hailar National Forest Park

Hailar National Forest Park (海拉尔国家森林公园) covers an area of 210,000 acres, with varying terrain that ranges from 612 meters to 462 meters in elevation. The eastern part features rolling sand dune landscapes, while the western area consists of flatter grasslands. This park is notable for being the closest national forest park to a city and is renowned for its representative sand area of Larix gmelinii (Hailar larch). This tree species has roots that are 2-3 times longer than its trunk, allowing it to thrive in harsh conditions, making it an excellent species for windbreaks and sand fixation in China’s “Three-North” region.

Hailar National Forest Park is divided into four areas: the South Garden, North Garden, West Garden, and the Reserve Resource Area, collectively referred to as “Three Gardens and One Area.” The South Garden contains cultural relics from the Northern Grassland microlithic culture, dating back thousands of years, making it one of the few sites in northern China from this period. The south side of Mingren Peak features remnants of Japanese military fortifications from the invasion. The North Garden is the largest area and is home to naturally preserved Larix gmelinii. Its most famous attraction is the Hailar White Beach Scenic Area, where intense battles occurred between the Soviet and Japanese forces in 1945, leading to the formation of the white sandy beach due to concentrated bombing and wind erosion.

The West Garden primarily consists of wetlands, covering a total area of 2,500 hectares, with 15 lakes spanning 250 hectares, the largest being Ice Lake at 56 hectares. These lakes are fed by springs, maintaining stable water levels year-round and supporting a rich variety of vegetation and birdlife, making it an ideal habitat for various bird species. The Reserve Resource Area includes seed collection zones, protective forest construction areas, demonstration areas for forest and grass management, sand control areas, wetland protection zones, and seedling cultivation and research areas.
