Jiangtaipu (将台堡), located in Guyuan City, Ningxia, is a historic site where the Qin Great Wall curves eastward, serving as a pivotal point in ancient times. Originally known as Xiwating, it was an essential military fortress and trade center along the Silk Road. The name “Jiangtaipu” was derived from a military earthwork constructed on the western side of the ancient fortress during the Northern Song Dynasty. The fortress itself now spans 110 meters in length from east to west and 101 meters in width from north to south, with walls standing 10 meters high.
A significant event occurred here on October 22, 1936, when the main forces of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army converged at Jiangtaipu, marking the successful conclusion of the Long March. This date has since been commemorated as the anniversary of the Long March’s victory, celebrated for its role in the Chinese Communist Party’s history.
Over the years, Jiangtaipu has undergone extensive renovations and expansions in 2006, 2016, 2017, and 2019, transforming the site into a memorial complex. The Jiangtaipu Revolutionary Site encompasses a gathering square, monument, memorial garden, historical park, and ecological parking area, covering approximately 65,600 square meters. Within the fortress, the Long March Revolutionary Site Memorial Park features the Three Armies Meeting Memorial Hall and an inscription by a veteran general, symbolizing the unity of revolutionary forces.
The eastern side of the fortress is home to the Red Army Commemoration Monument, which stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during this critical period. Among the relics preserved at Jiangtaipu are several national-level cultural artifacts, including the Red Army’s large sabers, as well as everyday items left behind, such as shoulder poles, lanterns, baskets, toolboxes, lunch boxes, water bottles, gunpowder boxes, clocks, grenades, medical kits, and even a small desk used for sending and receiving messages.
