Moerdaoga National Forest Park – The Last Bright Coniferous Virgin Forst

Moerdaoga National Forest Park In Hulunbuir

Moerdaoga National Forest Park (莫尔道嘎国家森林公园), located in the heart of the northern Daxing’anling region, spans an impressive area of 148,324 hectares with a forest coverage rate of 94.97%. Renowned for being home to the last bright coniferous virgin forest in China’s cold temperate zone, this park is a sanctuary for both flora and fauna, making it a prime destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The park is divided into six main scenic areas: Longyan Mountain, Cuiran Garden, Primitive Forest, Jiliu River, Folklore Village, and Boundary River Tour. Each area offers unique attractions, showcasing the stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity of the region. Among the park’s treasures are several nationally protected rare animals, including elk, lynx, and sable. Additionally, the park hosts a wide range of economically valuable wildlife such as wild boars, badgers, foxes, weasels, and snow hares, totaling nearly dozens of species.

Moerdaoga National Forest Park is not open year-round; the best visiting period is during the summer and autumn months, typically from May until the end of the National Day holiday in early October. This seasonal accessibility allows visitors to experience the park’s beauty when the weather is most conducive for exploration.

A standout feature of Moerdaoga is the Genghis Khan Park, situated on Longyan Mountain. Spanning 2,500 square meters, this park is a tribute to the great Mongolian leader and has become a must-visit site for tourists. The park is adorned with colorful wolf-tooth military flags, creating a striking visual. At the center of the park, visitors will find an impressive 18-meter tall statue of Genghis Khan, depicted in traditional armor, poised with a bow and arrow atop his steed. Nearby, a Mongolian-style pavilion stands solemnly, flanked by ancient weaponry including swords, spears, and halberds, adding to the park’s historical significance. The base of the statue features inscriptions celebrating Genghis Khan’s remarkable achievements.

Another notable area within the park is the Red Bean Slope, located about 9 kilometers from the main park. Named for its abundance of wild blueberries, this region showcases the typical fragrant forest type found in the Daxing’anling area. The Red Bean Slope is characterized by pure middle-aged larch forests, with distinct vegetation layers that are visually appealing. The 40 to 80-year-old larch trees are evenly distributed, their straight trunks supporting lush crowns that create a picturesque landscape.
