Reindeer Park, Hulunbuir – China’s Last Hunting Tribe

Reindeer Park Hulunbuir

The Reindeer Park (驯鹿苑), known as the Oroqen Sika Deer Tribe (敖鲁古雅鄂温克使鹿部落), is home to China’s last hunting tribe, the Aoluguya Oroqen. Located in Inner Mongolia, this unique cultural destination showcases the rich traditions and heritage of the Oroqen people, particularly their sika deer husbandry and hunting culture.

At the Aoluguya Folk Museum, visitors can explore the fascinating aspects of Oroqen customs and the shamanistic beliefs that are integral to their way of life. The museum features exhibits that highlight the mystical elements of the Oroqen culture and the deep respect they hold for nature. Additionally, guests can see the original dwellings of the Oroqen hunter-gatherers, known as “cuoluozi,” which provide a glimpse into their ancient lifestyle.

The park is home to over thirty reindeer, alongside various local wildlife, making it a living showcase of one of the last remaining hunting tribes in China. It serves as a cultural relic of the northern nomadic peoples, vividly representing the historical landscape of primitive societies. Visitors have the rare opportunity to closely interact with the reindeer, which are affectionately known as “four-unlike” due to their unique characteristics. Guests can feed, pet, and take photos with these gentle creatures, fostering a deep connection with nature and an appreciation for the primordial essence of life.

The Reindeer Park is particularly enchanting throughout the seasons. Winter transforms the forest park into a breathtaking wonderland, offering visitors the chance to ride reindeer sleds through a snowy landscape, immersing themselves in the beauty of the northern scenery. In spring, the excitement continues as the blooming azaleas paint the mountains red, white birches sway gracefully in the breeze, and larch trees awaken with vibrant green foliage. The streams, once silenced by winter, now serenade the surroundings with their cheerful melodies, while flowers compete for attention in a spectacular display.

Summer brings rolling green hills and the joyous time of reindeer velvet harvesting, while autumn captivates visitors with its stunning “Five Flower Mountains,” adorned with colorful frost and abundant fruit. This seasonal transition provides opportunities for tasting the mountain’s bounties and savoring the flavors of nature.
